Milaan, a youth-based team, came together to promote access to education in remote rural parts of India. This journey began in the sylvan hills of Uttarakhand in remote Gangolihat, far removed from the shadow of modern society. Read more about the journey from there to the hot climate of Uttar Pradesh.
Educating a girl is educating a future family. It is a well researched fact that educating girls does more to develop communities, increase income levels, decrease crime and ensure prosperity than any other single intervention. Through Milaan’s Outreach Program and Girl Icon Fellowship, we work in and with schools to identify and nurture girls who are interested in making change within their rural communities. Your donation can help us build a model school to pilot these programs, provide scholarships for our students, contribute towards our Mid-day meal program, or invest in creating Girl Icons.
In rural Uttar Pradesh, the lack of accessible secondary schools combined with the onset of menstruation, causes as many as 60% to 75% of girls to dropout of school after primary. The Girl Icon Awards celebrate and amplify the narratives of girls from throughout UP, promoting access to education and creating strong female leaders.
The Milaan School is a learning center that began as a youth inspired dream and eventually became reality through perseverance, good luck, generous well wishers, and a lot of hard work.
What began from a straw hut, 1 teacher, and 10 kids; today has 17 classrooms, 18 fulltime teachers and nearly 500 students.
The Making Schools Menstrual Friendly Initiative began as an impact venture (Azadi) with a mission to make menstruation a non-issue in Indian schools. Under Milaan, MSMF has devised a holistic approach that increases awareness about menstrual hygiene and access to menstrual management products while working to empower girls in Uttar Pradesh schools.
